Stitch Labs, a startup that helps small businesses manage inventory, orders, and shipping, announced today it has raised $ 1 million in seed funding from True Ventures.

Co-founder Jake Gasaway told VentureBeat in an interview that Stitch Labs really took off after it integrated with Etsy and Shopify. Many of the millions of Etsy users began making their way over to Stitch Labs and became paying customers, which helped the company gain attention from venture capital firms. Stitch Labs attributes its seed funding to showing VCs that they could build a business that generates revenue and could convert people into paying customers.

“Something that was pretty much consistent with our users, is that they loved our product. Once we integrated with Etsy and Shopify, we gained new customers — not just sign ups, but paying customers,” said Gasaway, “We spent time last summer talking to people, networking with small businesses to pave our way.”

Stitch Labs manages contacts, inventory, sales, invoicing, and shipping for online businesses. One reason many Alabama cities may not be seeing the sales-tax rebound they expected may be increasing online sales, according to a new study. A University of Alabama at Birmingham analysis released Tuesday estimates that the state of Alabama will lose more than $ 1 billion in sales and use taxes during the next five years unless laws involving online purchases are changed.

“We found that laws governing online shopping cost the state, counties and municipalities about $ 200 million in sales- and use-tax revenue annually and the loss of 3,500 to 4,000 jobs annually,” said Robert Robicheaux, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Marketing, Industrial Distribution and Economics in the UAB School of Business and lead study author.

In 1992 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that retailers who have no physical presence in a state, such as a store, warehouse or office, cannot be required to collect and remit applicable sales tax. The court, however, did not exempt buyers from the obligation to pay sales tax to their state for each online purchase. But few in-state consumers pay the taxes, Robicheaux said.

An online investment adviser for the less-than-wealthy crowd is about to make some big changes to broaden its audience.

SoHo-based Betterment.com is lowering its fees while forging into the retirement business, Betterment CEO Jon Stein told the Daily News.

The online broker that puts investing on autopilot without using flesh and blood money managers will take its management fees down to a range of 0.15% to 0.35% per year depending on a customer’s balance.

The bigger the account, the lower the price.

Previously, Betterment’s fees ranged from 0.3% to 0.9%.

The savings can be sizeable: under the old fee structure, someone with a $ 100,000 account would pay an annual fee of 0.5% or $ 500. Now, he would pay 0.15% or $ 150 a year.

“While our fees were always low, we wanted to make the difference so stark that it became a no-brainer,” Stein said.

Even so, Betterment’s management fees for some accounts are still pricier than a new rival, online investment adviser Wealthfront.

WASHINGTON — Cybersecurity experts urged senators Thursday to close loopholes in legislation to give the government more power to force critical industries to make their computer networks more secure.

Experts told the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee said the bill could allow many companies to avoid regulation entirely or drag out the process for up to eight years before they would actually have to improve their computer security.

The legislation would limit the number of industries subject to regulation to those in which a cyberattack could cause “an extraordinary number of fatalities” or a “severe degradation” of national security.

“So an individual infrastructure owner, such as a rural electricity provider, has no responsibility under this title if it can show that an undefended cyberattack would only cause an ordinary number of fatalities?” said Stewart Baker, a former assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security who is now with the law firm of Steptoe & Johnson. “How many dead Americans is that, exactly?”
